Uzumaki ( "Spiral") , released in 2000, is based on Junji Ito's episodic manga of the same name. The plot concerns a town infected with malevolent spirals. This abstract concept manifests in grotesque ways, such as a teenager's long hair beginning to curl and take over her mind, or a corpse wound around itself.

Among many bizarre features of the film is a heavy treatment with green colour filters, aping the style of the colour plates in the manga..

This was pretty interesting, I read the manga awhile ago and loved it, but I never knew there was a live-action movie of it.
Kevin (5/31/2008 @ 4:38 am)
Thanks, Admin. Now, to watch the last 6 minutes. :D

had the potential to great, but was only good.
Karin (11/23/2008 @ 6:43 pm)
This is a really good movie with some freaky bits. But you will only really enjoy it if you\'re into foreign movies. If you\'re after a movie like ringu you might not like this as it\'s quite arty, no cheap thrills every 10 minutes.
azdaliz (11/26/2008 @ 7:40 am)

azdaliz , It sounds like you internet connection , try pressing play then pressing pause and just wait for 5 mins or so to let the movie buffer up ,then press play again.
Lolita Von Lush (12/9/2008 @ 2:13 am)
Whether you liked this film or not, you should really read the manga. Its so much creepier, more weird things happen, everything is explained more and the ending is completley different. I feel like I understand the film more now and feel it could have been better. I found the Uzumaki manga online for free on this site it only took me two days to get through.
Sereena (12/16/2008 @ 10:36 am)
Beautiful experiment in surreal cinamatography
Randomique (12/24/2008 @ 10:19 am)
don\'t cry kirie, I\'ll be your mother ^_^
dixiebaby (1/16/2009 @ 4:08 am)
what a total waste of time!!!!!!!! do not watch even if your bored.
Louis (1/23/2009 @ 11:16 pm)
Did someone say this movie has got a great \"twist\"? :D This is a great movie. However, if you are looking for the traditional Yurei story, you should go somewhere else. This movie goes beyond and offers a more psychological course of events.
Shy (1/25/2009 @ 6:33 pm)
I didn\'t understand anything about this story. Maybe the manga is better than this... This movie is just nonsense for me. Why those strange things hapenned???
spiral (1/29/2009 @ 1:10 am)
I saw half earlier.Shame you cut it or have you? It\'s still on the board???
ash (2/10/2009 @ 7:25 am)
the Uzumaki manga is much better and creepier, but if you\'re a fan of Junji Ito, also check out his other work titled \'GYO\' its extremely disturbing.
Luisa (2/19/2009 @ 4:12 am)
This movie isn\'t really 50 minutes long, right? I only saw till the pocket mirror in the washing machinee. D:
Lavender_death (2/19/2009 @ 6:36 am)
WTF... this movie had a nice interesting premise and a horrible execution. didn\'t even know what was going on . why was the town cursed by the spiral?
Geminate (2/26/2009 @ 7:34 am)
Spiral is better not watched, you should just skip it. It\'s just not really a movie and has no ending. A generous 0 (zero) is all I can give it.
Marky (2/27/2009 @ 1:45 am)
The manga is more detailed, I\'d suggest reading the manga first, because in this movie they cut a lot of things and added some new parts...
Blue (2/27/2009 @ 10:11 pm)
I saw this film long ago and enjoyed it as much the second time around as the first time. It\'s worth the watch in my opinion.
Seph (2/28/2009 @ 1:54 pm)
This movie is great, I want more like this please...
Visually excellent and bizarre storyline. Love it.
Dark_Misstres (3/15/2009 @ 3:11 am)
Well..really odd movie...i hate creepy crawlers so that make me chills but...thats it...4/10 screamers.
Meri (3/15/2009 @ 4:08 pm)
Classic! But what always disturbs me is... Why in the hell do the girls say KAWAII at the huge slimy human-snails... O_O....
Freshyner (3/20/2009 @ 6:08 am)
Never before has the use of fades and transitions been so scary! The long shot where Kirie makes her way into Shuichi\'s residence, and we the audience are left outside, was to me one of the scariest bits in this film (in part 1). That slow, panning shot, the pounding inactivity of the scene at hand, briefly being overlayed with a human face, which you see appearing, but only really realize it\'s a face in the split-second before it fades back into the windows and alleys of the house scared the crap out of me! Just like the ghost of the father, in the background, at the start of part 2, as someone else mentioned. The number of vague faces and shapes of people that I picked up make the \"unfrightening\" scenes seem, to me, to be the scariest, since the hidden horrors simply aren\'t the focus of the moment, you just find yourself catching them. This movie is definitely not your typical horror movie.
Amanda (3/21/2009 @ 1:51 am)
Interesting story but the movie is too slow-paced that I fell asleep TWICE! this movie is like a lulluby and is pretty boring. The 2nd part is when the movie gets interesting but not enough to say the least...

The manga is actually better than this, but I suppose the movie did live up to it but still parts were missing. Parts like the \"Jack in the box\" guy should have been removed while the part where Kirie\'s hair grows in a spiral should (imo)should have been put in the movie since I felt it was vital.

4/10, because I was bored stiff, and it came to the point where I was just watching this for the sake of it.
Yuki Endo (4/3/2009 @ 4:02 am)
I love this horror film. It is scary and sad, but crazy.
It gives me idea for story.
Ting (4/4/2009 @ 11:08 pm)
This was fucking awful. Coooome on.... Seriously? How could they do something so goddamn awful to such a scarey manga? Poor Junji Ito. I feel bad for him. 1/10.
fyd (4/6/2009 @ 7:16 pm)
a.. tuh..dak lamak gai do
deamonflowe (4/13/2009 @ 5:10 am)
the manga is better but I dont believe this will be the end essentially they told the first volume in this film there has to be more to come like the grudge and ring.

but i agree it lost its potential and could have been so much more.
jin-seong (5/18/2009 @ 9:17 am)
not scary!

miina (6/13/2009 @ 6:55 am)
one of the first asian horror films ive watch. and what got me into it. very unique movie. some of the things in this movie covered what i always wondered about when i was a kid (like the part w/ the washing machine and car tire; i had a twisted mind when i was young). slow paced but creepy. the stalker has one of the creepiest faces ive seen. confusing ending though.
Ushiuni (6/18/2009 @ 3:24 pm)
I love this movie its not really scary or even gory
although granted the washing machine scene is alittle freaky its more bizzare i would recomend this film to those that like strange images watching this movie is like looking at a morbid painting its beautifull! Its great to see Junji Ito,s work being adapted for the big screen Tomie was also good although very different! now if only someone would make Gyo..... wanted to say thanks to the people that set this site up i was even able to watch Jigoku here (:
LouLou4u (7/25/2009 @ 5:55 am)
Really really weird. Didn\'t like it very real point to the movie...not really worth the time! 3/10

Can\'t Believe This Manga Has A Movie To It! It\'s So Awesome!!!! Love The Beginning!
Haiti PI (10/1/2009 @ 5:02 am)
I always find it amusing when those complaining about these movies say that the movie \'was not scary\'; How old are you, five? Once you\'re old enough to now that these are just stories, at best you would be \'disturbed\'. This movie would be described as Thought provoking , as well. Much like a Japanese Eraserhead.
Iron Machete (10/8/2009 @ 12:56 am)

The Moon Samurai (10/10/2009 @ 5:08 am)

the ending was very interesting indeed.
Sami (10/14/2009 @ 7:21 pm)
This was so artsy! For most of the first bit of the film, I really enjoyed how they adapted from the manga.

But then at the end, I couldn\'t believe it was over! It\'s like they touched on their favorite parts, and then just gave up when it seemed too long. ):
Ironmaw (11/9/2009 @ 2:00 am)
I don\'t understand why so many people disliked this movie ... This is by far one of my favorite Asian horror films to date ... Simply awesome. Dark, strange, gory in parts, and altogether surreal. I wish there were more like this one.

Finally! A review we can all understand!
SkyGemini (12/23/2009 @ 5:54 am)
I wish there were more movies like this too! I thought it was very cool...not as fleshed out as the graphic novel, obviously, but go to the link that Lolita Von Lush so nicely posted, the story in the manga is even more bizarre, creepy and entertaining.
It was good, though I think this movie could\'ve been done in 2 parts.

4.5/5 odd spiral thingies
Jade (12/31/2009 @ 7:04 am)
I just read the manga of this and it was soooo good. I heard there was a movie and here it is! I hope it\'s good too
Tiggy (1/19/2010 @ 2:22 am)
This was worth a watch it was really creepy, but the manga was better
Gothic (2/4/2010 @ 4:24 pm)
This is a very strange movie. I loved it. Very surreal and sort of unsettling. Agreed that it's not a typical horror movie, but something about it really creeped me out. Watching this really makes me want to pick up the manga now.
Plus Shuichi was pretty hot! lol
Gothic (2/8/2010 @ 11:02 pm)
Just finished reading the manga. Wow, so much more to the story than this movie covers. Amazing work. The movie still is well done in my eyes, just wish they made this movie after the manga was finished. It would have been really cool to see some of the images in the manga done on film. Especially the entwined villagers in the spiral rows of houses. ^_^

Needless to say, now I'm noticing spirals everywhere lol.
puru (2/20/2010 @ 8:09 am)
do not watch this movie if you
are impatient
hate slow-paced films
favor traditional horror like yurei
haven't read the manga
any combination of the above. otherwise knock yourself out
Toto (2/26/2010 @ 2:57 pm)
I liked this movie. I agree, Suichi was hot -_^
tylerandjack (3/31/2010 @ 11:08 am)
An interesting, entertaining movie with some great, surreal touches. Cheers.

Ahhh!! This is crap compared to the book!! DDDD: Hopefully the Tomie movies will be better... orz
Darcel (4/9/2010 @ 9:47 pm)
The manga is far better, I wish the movie had portrayed that more.
Victor (4/12/2010 @ 11:58 pm)
i luved the manga xD
Raina (4/26/2010 @ 9:39 pm)
was a good movie.. definately worth watching, i'd give it like 8.5/10
NKumiko (5/1/2010 @ 1:09 am)
Wow! Interesting!! I have read the manga before finding out about the movie so I pretty much know what would happen. The scenes in the movie are slightly different from the manga, but it's awesome! :D Great movie. (6/26/2010 @ 9:02 pm)
i am a BIG fan of asian horror movies. Not sure th full reason behind it, maybe it's because they are not always good vs. evil. I sometimes root for the "bad guy", who very often the "victim" in American/European movies. I guess I empathize because I have suffered through abuse/harassment/critisism/bad times myself. I've even been seconds away from being killed by someome I've loved/thought I loved me. I guess I'm a sucker for lost souls, and/or "strays". Plus I find asian ben sexy, and am sometimes envious of asian women for their pefect, doll-like beauty. And of course here I go again blabbing on forever, as is my nature. I just really appreciate Asian culture. So much more pure than my greedy Western upbringing. Anyway, I love, love, love this site and will continue to donate to keep it working. And any attractive asain men, I'm here to chat, lol. Honestly though, I don't identify with my superficial money obsessed peers. Email me @ So sorry to admins.. I KNOW this isn't a DATING site. Just looking for people with common interests. So sorry if I've offended ANYONE!
minzel (7/2/2010 @ 6:38 pm)
definately a different type of horror, they did it well! I guess I'll have to check out the manga now.. :)

I love the atmosphere...for me it's one of the best horror movies I ever seen. Very unique.
Junji Ito and his stories it's really somethingXD
Celibi (7/18/2010 @ 1:14 am)
I liked it , but it was a bit short. And there was a bunch of things not in there , that was in the manga ( I

This movie was shit compared to the manga!

I can't tell if the girl was a bad actor or not but it seemed like she was trying to sound like an anime character with her 'ehh??' 'ohh desuu' 'hai' and 'eheh heh' lines. She wasn't convincing at all.

Not only that but they killed off the Jack in the box dude terribly and it didn't relate to spirals, also the boyfriends death sucked and wasnt emotional.
In the manga it is highly romantic how they die.

The good thing of this film was the research clip which explained a little bit about the eternity aspect of the spiral, linking it to kagami, and in turn mirrors (alternate universes) and ouroboros (a serpent/dragon in alchemy which signifies eternity). That link I had only half made and was glad to see the film clarify it (or at least it seemed that way to me).
Other then that, it dragged on pointless aspects, didn't show important parts, the ending was crap as with the acting and the emotion connection failed big time. =/ Didn't do a brilliant manga (one of my favourites) justice at all.
