I enjoyed watching it, perfect mixture between crime, mystery, horror - in the second part i felt like being trapped in a Lynch-movie, great!
Ethen (1/19/2009 @ 8:33 pm)
From what I know about it, it is based on Anime. But I don\'t watch the stuff so that\'s all I know.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni is a film based on various source materials such as novel and comic of the same title. The story center around a young man name Keiichi Maebara and his encounter in the rural setting of Hinamizawa. In the rural town, the legend of lord Oyashiro, a sort of mythical deity that serve as the town’s guardian becomes the backdrop of the sinister secret, insanity or rational in the story. The first half of the film can be sum up as a meal being very slowly digested. The story board really take its time at setting up the various relationships, but failed at being convincing or even make you care about any of the characters. The poor dialogues, the unnecessary characters and cameo in the film painted itself too much a portrait of an adolescence’s fantasy. The plot does pick up on the latter half and this is where the film is done well and effective. It’s an alright film that cut itself too much like a comic book. As a film, it needs to be more grown up.

eze (1/25/2009 @ 7:39 pm)
watch the anime! the movie is in fact just the first part of the anime, which is much scarier and a lot more complicated. so if you didn´t get the movie the anime will shed some light...at least later on...a lot later. imagine there would be different ways it could happen or end :>
Megs (1/26/2009 @ 10:25 pm)
Why did they call this \"Shrill Crys\"? It\'s \"Higurashi no Naku Koror ni\" or \"When Cicadas Cry\". The poster even says so! It totally threw me off when I was looking for this movie :(

Anyway, the movie is based on the first chapter of the anime that was subsequently based on the extremely popular video games of the same title for the PS2. The anime became really popular, really quickly, so they released a manga version and a novel. They are also currently releasing new video games for the series on the Nintendo DS in Japan.

They did a good job on the movie overall seeing as the characters are somewhat difficult to transpose in to real life. However, I recommend watching the anime for both the question and the answer chapters (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai) for this to really make sense. I mean, it is a movie. They only have a limited amount of time and this plot line is deep. I\'ve also heard rumours of a sequal being in the works, so perhaps they will do the answer chapter for this arc :D
Imahavah (1/30/2009 @ 2:41 am)
This definitely does not do the story justice. The anime is much much better and tells the whole story.
xavimox (1/30/2009 @ 6:36 pm)
whats the name of the intro song?
Dchan (2/2/2009 @ 4:01 pm)
I too would like to know the name of the intro song. I have also started the anime now b/c of the movie.
Dchan (2/8/2009 @ 10:08 am)
Xavimox if ur looking at this its dchan. I FOUND THE NAME OF THE SONG! WHEEL OF FORTUNE, BY EIKO SHIMAMIYA
Traprat (4/25/2009 @ 10:31 pm)
They should make the characters look a bit more like in the Anime.
Meh, the movie\'s ok, but ofcourse the anime is better.
mseng (6/3/2009 @ 10:16 pm)
it was interesting i guess.
Avocatzo (6/18/2009 @ 5:55 am)
Wow. This was truly intriguing. Apparently there was a sequal made in 2009 called Shrill Cries-Reshuffle. Can you guys get that one too. I saw a trailer and it looks really awesome. Thanks, and great work, guys.
Sunshine (6/25/2009 @ 4:21 am)
yeah, i agree Avocatzo, it would be sooo sweet if you could get the second one on here sada...your site is #1!!!
me lol (6/26/2009 @ 2:27 am)
I remember watching this, can\'t wait to see the sequel!!!
Loenor (7/6/2009 @ 1:39 am)
I was somewhat disappointed, the anime is much better. I guess they had to chop the story up to make it fit in a movie. I\'m not saying don\'t watch this, just saying watch the anime also if you want the entire story any a bette scare factor. If yyou like live remakes also watch deathnote, now thta was a classic.
LouLou4u (7/27/2009 @ 10:02 am)
good flick, good acting....more a mystery/thriller. Kept my attention...didnt like the end tho...7/10
Helix (8/23/2009 @ 5:59 pm)
waiting for the sequal to appear on this site, prefer the anime though.
dj chaos (9/20/2009 @ 5:44 pm)
@ec and Megs, the anime series was inspired from the manga, as was the game. I love when people talk like they know what they are talking about but don\'t. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is a Japanese murder mystery dōjin soft sound novel series produced by 07th Expansion. The games are built on the NScripter game engine and are playable on Microsoft Windows PCs. The first game in the series, Onikakushi-hen, was released on August 10, 2002, and the eighth and final game in the original PC series, Matsuribayashi-hen, was released on August 13, 2006. While the first four games carried the overall title Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, the next four games were produced under the title Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai. A bonus fan disc called Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei was released on December 31, 2006. In addition to the original series, new story arcs were created in manga form and in video games for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS in order to expand upon the story further.
dj chaos (9/20/2009 @ 5:55 pm)
Either way this live action sucked! The characters were all wrong, age, personalities, looks, everything. This crap was at best annoying as it only barely followed the first story line and left out more than it included. People who watched the anime will just be annoyed and those who did not will just be lost. I would call it an overall waste of time.

Megs, if you are going to post that much info, please make sure you are correct. Your order of events are way out of whack. First came the novel series, second came the computer games, then came the anime and after all that came the Playstation 2 and Nintendo DS games.

Also the poster does not say Higurashi no Naku Koror ni, it says Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. ひぐらしのなく頃に
Cheshire Saku (10/21/2009 @ 10:13 am)
L.. Higurashi is my favorite anime of all time. And to answer a few of these, there are two seasons, plus they just started the third season! I believe they have 3 or 4 episodes now? Anyways! When I saw that they didn\'t even try to make the characters looke remotely similar to the anime versions, I was like AWWWW Now I can\'t enjoy this as much! D: But, all in all, it\'s alright, the anime is much better of course c:
Ritch (12/3/2009 @ 8:39 am)
yeh gotta say that it doesnt measure up
Jane (1/17/2010 @ 3:24 pm)
@ DJ chaos. There\'s really no reason to be rude about it, what she meant was that the sound novels came first, the anime and manga adaptations followed. The actual drawn manga version was released /after/ the original play novel/games. I think it is you that seem to be confused about what you are talking about. Copying sections from Wikipedia does not make you sound smart, just an ass.

Aside from that, this movie was OK at best, it kept my attention enough, I probably would have enjoyed it more if I\'d seen it before the anime version, but what can you do?
