After one of their friends commits suicide, strange things begin happening to a group of young Tokyo residents. One of them sees visions of his dead friend in the shadows on the wall, while another's computer keeps showing strange, ghostly images. Is their friend trying to contact them from beyond the grave.

or is there something much more sinister going on?.

Much much better than the American remake. Very good story, and gets the entire message across better...which makes for an even creepier film. The American version was weak.
anonnymous (9/1/2008 @ 11:29 pm)
All american remakes suck ass. Its the truth. they are too retarded to come up with better ideas for the movie remakes anyways.
Kiki (10/8/2008 @ 7:42 pm)
I agree, the original is usually always better than the remake. Don\'t get me started on what happened to Ju-on >.>

ahh man, all the cool kids turn into black stains, its not fair..i wish i was a black stain, i guess im just not depressed enough, wahhhhhhhhhhhhh I...CANT...TAKE...IT..ANYMORE wahhhhhh *turns into black stain*
lulumoooisahoe (10/9/2008 @ 12:49 am)
this film was terrible, how can anyone like it? the story had no structure, it was poorly organised. The actors were terrible. Serious, are you kidding me?
Gemma (10/23/2008 @ 2:17 am)
I know what you mean, the acting was pretty bad, they didn\'t seem very distraught over their friend\'s deaths.

Also how bloody confusing was it? I don\'t mind films raising some questions to discuss about but for god\'s sake, to me this made absolutely no sense. Why they turned into black stains, what the ghosts were planning/doing. At first you think to yourself \"Ah now I understand\" something else happens that makes you go \"EHHH???\" I bought this movie for only about £4 anyway, and although it is pretty creepy in some parts, and the atmosphere is dark, the actors are awful (despite the one guy throughout the movie who was quite hot) and the plot is so darn confusing, you\'d wish you would turn into a black stain yourself.
knx (12/11/2008 @ 6:00 am)
really don\'t like this one, maybe cause i just didn\'t get it. 5/10
Lily (12/27/2008 @ 3:55 am)
I saw a really low budget Turkish version a while back and even that one was better than the Hollywood tripe.
ARRRRRRHHHHH (2/1/2009 @ 3:26 am)
Seph (2/24/2009 @ 2:15 pm)
ARRRRHHHH You have to be joking. The Americans didn\'t even get Kairo.
This version is better as the sense of emptiness is undeniable and the atmosphere is far more frightening. There is nothing ordinary about American actors so the sense of fear for their lives is gone. I am always aware about them being actors and hardly ever like anyone in Western movies. I find characters from Asian horror movies far more interesting as they can seem like ordinary every day folks having extraordinary things happen to them. That\'s when the fear seems more real. This is a good movie. 8/10
sammysin (3/3/2009 @ 12:43 am)
the finest asian horror film ever made.
kiyoshi kurosawa doesn\'t put a foot wrong. everything about it is stunning. the visuals, the sound, the acting. truly immersive and surreal. pure gold.

great movie and to clear up the only thing yanks are good at is starting wars end of!!!!! 9/10
Natre (3/13/2009 @ 5:59 pm)
Good movie and very creepy throughout especially when you see the first ghost in the forbidden room. Plot weak but probably cos I didnt understand it.
thr3e (3/14/2009 @ 3:32 am)
I must agree with anonymous [below]. American remakes should just be erased from existence. They hardly even touch upon the REAL message across and they aren\'t scary. Westerners are only doing it for the money. I\'m an American, I know so and it\'s so very disappointing.
That\'s why i love this site!

I commented earlier but I feel this is seriously under appreciated. It\'s visually amazing, the ghosts are just like you and I, that scene with the woman moving is slow motion is my favourite from any movie. I love the \"help\" when the phone is used and I love the isolation. The moving has a meaning, if you are unable to find it through watching the movie, at least research it elsewhere before you say you don\'t get it. wikipedia anyone?
that\'s the thing with kiyoshi kurosawa, he is an intelligent film maker who makes films for people who are intelligent. I feel really bad for people who miss the point of his work, especially with kairo. stop talking about the remake and give this moving some praise, we wouldn\'t have had half the movies we have now without this movies influence.
Karin (4/25/2009 @ 12:56 am)
Very much recommended, this movie is should be in the top 3 movies of this site. It will creep you out for weeks.
And btw, the acting is not wooden, these people are japanese okay? They just act like that normally.
Michael A. (4/25/2009 @ 3:58 am)
I can\'t believe anyone would have complaints about this film being too slow or too long. The amazing thing about the film is the creepy and lonely atmosphere that it creates. Watch this ALONE in the dark and you\'ll feel that uneasyness and almost depressive atmosphere.
Funny, the first time I watched the film was on this site and there was a noise all the way through it, very much like a slight electricity buzzing. I thought it was part of the film and I thought it was great and added to that uneasy atmosphere. Having got the dvd I realise it\'s not in the film at all lol. Which is a shame as it sounds great, so keep it in it\'s fantastic, genius in fact. I\'m serious.
People must watch this film at least twice before judging it, it\'s deliberatly slow paced and is much the better for it. The Americans absolutely massacred it with their re-make, but that\'s no surprise is it now?
Sakura_Freya (4/25/2009 @ 9:16 am)
I love this version! more than the americans wanna be, sorry guys but us true they are just bad copies of the original!
word (4/25/2009 @ 12:53 pm)
this movie is in so many ways superior to other japanese productions, impossible to explain what those who didn\'t like it are missing.
this is terror, hidden in a cloak of quiet, empty pictures.
angel (4/26/2009 @ 12:27 pm)
i don\'t agree with imahavah the american version is much better it has a story line to it and what happend and why is like that ,but in the japanese version is has no story line to it and it abit confused to what happend to all the people and why is only she the one who still alive i don\'t get the story .so this movie is 4/10 bad don\'t watch this if you do good luck.
jagen (4/28/2009 @ 10:19 pm)
this movie is wayyy better then that american crap!
Dbest (4/30/2009 @ 9:55 am)
is this movie REALLY worth watching? because i saw \"our\" PULSE and i was really mad my sister rented the worse movie in the world. in fact we were all mad. so before i click play tell me, is it worth it???

It totally suck ! didn\'t like this movie at all 4/10
JadeMoon (5/4/2009 @ 5:27 am)
This movie is horrible! OMG it drags on and on, not scary at all, very depressing- waste of my time. 2/10. Those of you who gave 4s must have HUGE hearts or something cause this was a pice of crap- Crazy Lips was better than this crap!
suhana (5/4/2009 @ 6:11 pm)
this movie is better story telling and the Hollywood giving better effect(the looks of the ghost and such)..but still i cant understand..why the ghost need to be lonely in eternal life as a black stain? anyway worth to watch both version and make ur own perception about the movie :)
Leech Zombie (5/7/2009 @ 5:13 am)
I am getting so fed up completely of american ripping off the Asian horror!! GET YOUR OWN IDEAS!! Geez seriously gosh whats next!? You don\'t see asians making thier own version of Freddy or That dumbass scream killer geez!! If anything they should just dubb it and just get famous americans to do the dubbed voices or something.!!
kali jagan (5/9/2009 @ 4:26 pm)
both films suck waste of time
sasha (5/13/2009 @ 7:00 am)
I\'d rather watch stupid movies than this one. I\'m sorry but this sucks A FUCKING LOT. try to watch THE WIG or THE VICTIM, those are very nice horror films. They can be watched at this site. :)
van (5/13/2009 @ 2:40 pm)
the overall thought of the story of this film is kind of ambiguous...this movie gets even more scary if you\'re going to watch it alone in your gives a shaky frigid creepiness feeling rather than a shock and thrill emotion:) I\'ll give a 7/10...
dorky (5/14/2009 @ 12:03 pm)
This one is just PLAIN BAD. The plot is misleading, and not to mention how UNNATURAL the characters act in the story. Not even creepy at all.
Deadpuppy (5/20/2009 @ 3:41 am)
I\'m so sick of people on this site putting down American movies, yes Hollywood makes remakes of Asian films. They have to most of the Asain films have weak plots so they have to remake these films for more savy American\'s.Stop putting down American\'s we invented the film industry,so dill with it!!!
Alex (5/25/2009 @ 11:23 pm)
There are things to put down about the American movies. There are more weak points in the American remakes then the Asian originals. No matter what they do, there has to be some form of sex, drug or alcohol use, excessive swearing or some other vulgarities thrown in. They don\'t HAVE to remake the movie, they choose to, and it just so happens that they ruin it. So why don\'t you deal with the animosities towards American remakes, there wouldn\'t be any if the remakes were done tastefully and according to story.

Also you spelled \'savvy\' wrong. Savvy?
jin-seong (5/27/2009 @ 10:25 am)
not scary and looks so old! but it\'s ok 5/10. . .

Ok So I Admit That I Did Enjoy The American Version Of This Movie A Bit HOWEVER Kairo Actually Scared The Crap Outta Me When I First Saw It... I Literally Had To Pause The Movie And Do Something Else For A While...
It\'s The Way They Were Talking About The Emptiness Of Death... Creeped Me Out For Real... That\'s Why I Love Asian Horror... The Simplicity Of A Story Without All The Hollywood Flair And Graphic Can Really Effect You On A Different Level...

9/10... Love It... And Actually Own It...
Deadpuppy (7/5/2009 @ 4:20 am)
@Alex; Thanks for spelling lesson, you douche.I can\'t help it if this movie suck\'s it just does and it sounds like you do too.People like you have there head so far up your own ass its sad.Try watching a movie without prejudge it because of were it from and just watch!I feel sorry for people like you,I really do.
Aoi Neko (7/7/2009 @ 5:52 pm)
So, after leaving negative comments on one movie, I want to go back and leave positive comments on an older one. It\'s the movies, and not that I hate everything I see. I was really lucky on my early explorations of Asian horror. _The Ring_ was the first I saw, and Kairo was the second. Now, Kairo is not for everyone. For that matter, Kiyoshi Kurosawa is not for everyone. The movie is slow, and deliberate, it has no plot, and if you\'re looking for fast-paced scares, look elsewhere. But for me, this is 10/10 genius. It\'s lonely, and it\'s creepy and it\'s about watching as the world falls apart: as the line between the warm human world and the cold infinite beyond is slowly being erased, and the cold is starting to creep into you. It\'s the movie for which I forgive Kurosawa all his sins, even _Rofuto_.
Sang (8/19/2009 @ 11:02 pm)
Hahaha at 27:03 the female ghost trips.. soo scary haha, if a ghost was approaching me and trips i\'ll slap dat bitch up..good movie otherwise
YukiXShuri (9/4/2009 @ 1:12 am)
This was such a good movie! I saw this last year on Showtime and it was my first asian horror movie! this was the movie that started it all, it was a very good movie to watch and it wasnt confusing at all. The ending wasn\'t that bad either and like Aoi Neko said this movie isn\'t for everyone. It\'s a little slow at first and this is what i like about it. I donn\'t mind those movies when things pop up out of no where but this one seemed to be a little more thought out and this is what makes it great. It\'s a must see for people like me who like movies that actually make sense. It only had one random part and thats when the ghost girl is running in slow montion but its still a must see. 10/10!
natydawg (9/4/2009 @ 3:15 am)
great movie WATCH THE MOVIE YOURSELF BEFORE READING REVIEWS to many bad reviews on great movies
Canadian (9/4/2009 @ 9:43 am)
Yes it was artistic and yes it had some good points, a social commentary on isolation blah blah blah BUT it was also really long and boring, I kept trying to get creeped out (it\'s midnightt and I\'m all alone in the dark) but NOTHING.
Yes it\'s definitely worth a watch but NOT scary at all, maybe creepy but only slightly.
The American version was shallow, and the storyline was GREATLY simplified, but at least it was scray and ntertaining.
Differet things are scary to different culture groups.
Yes the yanks can butcher a movie or two, but does it really hurt to have more then on version of something?
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
Plus it\'s not like 80% of people in the western world would have heard about any of these truly great asian movies if it weren\'t for the remakes, we see those and then search out the originals.
That\'s the great part about it all, if one version doesn\'t scare you the other one might.
And where exactly do you think all your zombie movies come from hmmmmm?
Confused (9/4/2009 @ 9:47 am)
Who the hell was the guy who first decided to tape up his room? Did that trap a ghost? How?
In the yank version the red kept the ghosts at bay. What was the computer program about?
WTF actually started all this, and where did the grad student fit in?

This movie was much more better than the remake, however, I believe that it still could have been much better. The movie, unfortunately, is too slow at the start, however near the end I found the music track and empty streets of japan were excellent.
I will be honest and say the acting was weak in some areas (especially with the death of the friend) and that there should have been more depth in the story. Overall, I found it a thrilling idea, but still, it had so much more potential.
Tiamhaidh (10/25/2009 @ 2:59 am)
This movie made me cream my pants.
Tek (10/29/2009 @ 2:47 am)
Okay. I watched the american version of this in theatres BECAUSE I live in California, and i think i was 14 or 15 at the time... I watched the ring in theatres too, and both scared the hell out of me. Years later, I get into this asian video curse/addiction and have to watch every movie on this site or i would die in seven days/fade away into ashes/be brought down to hell by hellgirl/killed by a psycho if I didn\'t (or sadakosboy would just come through my computer and choke the crap outta me) anyways, I love both. Even america, and asia continent have remakes of their OWN movies. Like, remember Maximum Overdrive? That movie ROCKED (Most things addapted from stephen king\'s novels rock), but then they made a remake called TRUCKS! boy did it f\'n suck. or the countless asian remakes of new movies? My point is, give this movie a try. I was curious about it, it\'s okay, but i\'m so used to other movies that this one really didn\'t creep me out (or it\'s the fact i\'m 22 now). I found it a little draggy, but Asian\'s love their suspense, and because their culture is steeped in tradition and folklore, some meanings run deep. America\'s only been around since 1776 and pretty mixed, so we hardly have that stuff-the film industry relies more on the present thus, more action. Anyways, I\'ve run off on a tangent...oh yeah, don\'t get mad because someone doesn\'t have your opinion. If we all had the same opinion, we wouldn\'t have such a fantastic array of movies from all over the world! At least appreciate this website for what it has. And appreciate the people who work their butts of to make these movies.
Like I said, watch if ya want. Not as action packed, but deep.
astarte (11/13/2009 @ 4:28 pm)
not great, seen the american version first, didn\'t like that one either, not a very good story I guess.
Wasa (11/26/2009 @ 11:40 pm)
Maybe it\'s just my mood today, but this felt very slow. I had to take a break and wake myself back up multiple times. The acting was emotionally void, whether that was the intent or just bad acting. The movie gave me the creeps at some points but over all put me to sleep.

Della Morte (12/2/2009 @ 3:29 am)
you know ive been coming on here for a while learning more about the culture of asian horror and i have to say your comments about america are lame. you all should figure out where to point the finger. im american does that mean i love stealing movies??? hollywood is what you should be preaching about. also asain movies only count for a small percent of remakes. hollywood rinses out every beautiful classic i ever cared about including american films. holly claims that acting in a horror movie is the 2nd worst thing you can do with your career next to porn. but they see all the idiots packing up the theater to see a movie like the grudge that they have never heard of. simply because a freaked out scary asian woman pops out you. you should also consider the fact that someone had to sell them the rights, you tell me whos selling out. for all you who promote hate to america rember this dont hate the player hate the game

Jeez y\'all, can\'t we just get along?! It\'s ok to like all different kinds of movies whether they\'re North American, Asian, European or whatever! It just mean you have a broad palette & there\'s absolutely nothing wrong with that. There is something wrong with wilful ignorance. There\'s good and bad everywhere, if Americans are remaking Asian films, well, didn\'t somebody famous say something like \"the best form of a compliment is to emulate\"? They have big $$ to throw at films, they don\'t always get them right but hey, ya can\'t win \'em all! But that remake also draws people to the originals, which gets them into the Asian(or others) horror genre and that\'s all good! Really! I wonder how sites like these took off after people saw The Rings and The Grudges and wanted more, wanted to see the originals and then some.

To say they can\'t come up with original horror, that\'s preposterous! What about the Clive Barkers, Stephen Kings, etc.? I like anything that\'s good, that doesn\'t mean it has to have had a big budget, but nothing wrong if it did.

You should see there\'s like a civil war going on over Avatar at the IMDB and it\'s just ridiculous. I say, watch the movies for yourself and make up your own mind, like this one which is entertaining...not the best, not the worst. If you\'re basing your opinion solely on the opinions of others or because it\'s a remake or low-budget, you\'re just missing out on something you might have really enjoyed otherwise.

Thanks for posting this anyways! 3/5 inkblots ;P

I was a little disappointed with this film, because I'd heard so much good things about it. The story is quite interesting.. but I just kept expecting bigger things to happen and they didn't.. the woman in the room was kinda scary though!

Meee! (4/29/2010 @ 11:13 pm)
I loved this movie. It was REALLY good and suspensfull and sad. AND people!!!! Stop saying that Americans STEAL Asian movies. We don't!!! If we did, Asians would sue us! What Americans do is they ASK the Asians for permission to do the remakes and the Asians gladly accept and get alot of the profit made off of the remake!!! I also like the Asian versions better but I don't diss Americans just because they APPRECIATED and LIKED the Asian movies so much that they wanted to SHOW WESTERNERS AN ENGLISH AND MORE UNDERSTANDABLE VERSION. NOT because we're assholes. Plus, even though I loved this one, it was more emotional and sad and awesome but the American version gave a bit more scares and actually gave more of an explaination unlike the Asian. In the end, the Asian versions are first and better! SO SHUT UP! please.
Griffin (5/2/2010 @ 5:27 pm)
Awful! I don't mind when a movie negates character development or story structure for a reason but it feels like this movie did it because they forgot that those were important parts of a film. Maybe an explanation of what was happening or character's motivations would have helped. The only plus was the incredible soundtrack.

Wow, that was actually awesome! The beginning was kind of lame, but then somewhere in the middle, it began to remind me of 28 Days Later (don't ask me why). Who knew the Japanese could make awesome zombie movies? :D
