Jeritan Kuntilanak Movie review:

Here's another one about that campfire variant in regional folklore. "Jeritan Kuntilanak" is a nightmarish cross between "The Haunting " and "Final Destination". Five friends stumble upon an abandoned house while on a road trip. Needless to say , the old house is haunted by an army of Kuntilanaks and one of the girls goes missing and is feared dead. Only four of themn return to Jakarta but little do they know , they brought back with some access baggage. They begin to mysteriously die a horrible death , leaving Vivin, and Yunita to slolve the mystery..

I adore this site SO much..Been hooked for few months now. Canada has some good movies but the Movies I have seen on this site BLOW ME AWAY...awesome job..hope this site stays for a long , long time:)

WHY INDONESIANS HAVE THE WORST HORROR MOVIES:
1. Over using the same “cheap” scare scenes…over and over and over and over again. I don’t know how many times have I seen that scene where a ghost is behind (in front, below, beside, etc.) and when the character turns around (or looks to the side, looks up, looks down, etc), and the ghost disappears….it happens in every horror movies, but Indonesians just milk this scare tactic to its’ bone until it is no longer scary anymore…..and not just in this movie, EVERY Indonesian horror movie milks this tactic to the bone~! Seriously guys…..that’s why Indonesia never became critically acclaimed for its’ horror movies- seriously…

2. One word: BANAL. Always having the same stereotypical characters: the jock, the sexy vixen, the coward, the innocent girl next door, gathered in the stereotypical setting: a college. What is with Indonesians and the fascination with College kids and college campus? Is it really where all the horror takes place in Indonesia?

3. No originality. I am pretty sure #1 and #2 explained it well enough, but to add more: are you guys even coming up with any new makeup for your ghosts? It’s always the same look in every movie- the typical run down, dirty, and boney-ambiguous ghost with nothing much to do but show up every so often only to disappear when the character looks at his/her direction…..SIGH*

I sweat watching an Indonesian horror movie is like watching the looping backgrounds in a Hannah-Barbara cartoon-they are all just the same, looping again, and again and again and again and again….

@Sick_of_Indonesian_h-movies, I essentially feel the same way about most of the ones I've seen. Thanks for putting it so succinctly. The only one I really liked was The Forbidden Door [2009].
Just from the plot descriptions above, this one sounds like another tired rip-off of I Know What You Did Last Summer [which I thought was shite, anyway].

WHY INDONESIANS HAVE THE WORST HORROR MOVIES:

and more....

4. Does it ever occur to Indonesian horror directors to space the scare every 15-30 Mounties instead of every 3 to 4 seconds? Yes 3 to 4 seconds is quite an overstatement, it's more like 1-2 seconds apart using tactic #1 stated above......and does it occur to the "very-oginal" indonesian horror directors to come up with some other scare tactics over so often? WE GET THE POINT OK~!!! THE GHOST IS AROUND AND HE LIKES TO DISAPPEAR WHEN SOMEONE LOOKS...

5.The only saving point of every Indonesian horror movie is the drop dead gorgeous women....what a waste of talent, sorry ladies- you aint goin too far though, starring in movies like these....

@plop888- THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT< I AM GLAD I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE OUT THERE WHO FEELS THE SAME
plop888 (6/26/2010 @ 11:22 pm)
@Sick_of..., re- the girls, yup, they're hotties, all right, :P but career futures? XD
Point #4 is a good one, too. LOL!
IndoGirl (6/27/2010 @ 5:21 am)
@Plop888: No worries about their career futures... those girls don't only star in horror movies like this. For Indonesian stars, horror movie is only a mile stone for them before they enter the movie industry. After this movie, they will get a lot of advertisement offers, and offers to stars in many chick flicks and romance drama (which usually more than 100 episodes long because of the boring long-winded nonsensical plot)

Re: Sick_of_Indonesian_h-movies

You forgot one major drawback in your list that has also really turned me off these kinds of "Horror" movies from indonesia.

5. Comic Relife Where It's Not Needed.

I swear, Indonesia horror movies are the worst when it comes to putting in comic relife and over-the-top goofy supporting characters.

Now, comedy in horror can work but it takes a delicate hand and awareness of when the mood is proper to mix the two genres together properly. Indonesian horror is terrible at this to the point of making the movie insufferable to sit through.

I once saw a horror movie from Indonesia where one of the supporting character's job was to act as comic relif. He didn't just act it, he threw it in your face! And just ruined the mood whenever he appeared on screen acting like a coked up village idiot.

There's nothing I hate more than comic relife and comedy being thrown in where it doesn't belong. Granted, some Hong Kong and Chinese Horror is guilty of it as well. But nothing compared to I-Horror. At least C-Horror and HK-Horror don't smear it all over the place. I-Horror is more guilty of this trend and is another main reason I refuse to watch their brand of "Scary movies".

If you're going to add comic relife or comedy, MAKE IT FUNNY! And don't go ape, dumping it in places that kill the tension completley. Above all, learn that sometimes less is enough if you've got an established tension or suspenseful mood.
Judilynn (6/27/2010 @ 7:30 am)
Eagle32... I agree with you TOTALLY!! There are a lot of Indonesian horrors with some goofy guy that you just want to ignore but cant because they throw him in your face every other minute. Your comment says it all!
Sick_of_Indonesian_h-movies (6/27/2010 @ 1:26 pm)
@Eagle32:
Great point added...I completely agree with the unnecessary comic relief.
kitty (6/27/2010 @ 3:48 pm)
For some reason I cannot play the movie. It says to click here to download the plugin. I did and still does not work. Can anybody tell why it is not working for me???
The Cooliest (6/27/2010 @ 4:22 pm)
Can somebody actually comment on the movie itself instead of the general mediocre depiction of Indonesian media, I know you're whiny people desperate for your opinions to be heard but at least reply on the movie of which page you're on.
Senzo (6/27/2010 @ 4:26 pm)
And why would you find strange the feeling of someone passing behind you, when you are in a crowded place, such a school?
plop888 (6/27/2010 @ 7:10 pm)
@Eagle32- I think you've made a good point as well. The comedy is on the level of Abbott & Costello Meet Dracula or The Three Stooges Vs. The Mummy.
@The Cooliest- the truth hurts, don't it? BTW, we're not desperate, we're intelligent, & annoyed by idiocy.
@Senzo, also a good point.
i_hate_stupid_movie (6/27/2010 @ 9:56 pm)
this movie is just plain STUPID... the ghost doesn't seem to have any goal at all it just appears / dissappears every couple of seconds. it simply doesn't make sense.

i agree completely with Sick_of_Indonesian_h-movies, plop888, and Eagle32...

ah, you gotta love those kuntilanaks. very regional entertainment value.
HaitiPI (6/28/2010 @ 7:37 am)
Not too bad. Typical Indo Ghost story with a lot of pop up frights and attractive young ladies (and a guy or two if that is your interest). Worth the hour or so it takes to watch, but not one I would add to my library for repeat viewing.
Agree WitYou (6/28/2010 @ 7:50 pm)
First I have to say thanks for this awsome website. Cause the American hollywood suck balls with horror and this site brings out the definition of horror.

Second Indonesian horror sucks worse, when were they into horror anyway? Their tactics with making a scary film are just old and obvious to know what the hell is going on.
ROBERT BLACK (6/30/2010 @ 6:39 pm)
I agree completely with many of the comments about 21st century Indonesian horror films. One issue no one here has brought up is that EVERY single one of the recent films has some sort of "GOD" message either praising the muslim religion for saving us, a character or a character introduced out of the blue that brings up prayer as a solution to combat the Ghost, evil or whatever. Even from characters that would never praise religion in real life like a hot scantilly dressed college girl. It's usually very forced, awkward, and hackneyed. This is probably done to I guess satisfy the censors in Indonesia. I can see no other reason for it.
kid (6/30/2010 @ 9:16 pm)
this movie is so ridiculous it's unreal. Seriously, the girl got asthma which means she CAN'T breathe! Yet they drove from morning til NIGHT?? HELLO?? I don't think you survive more than 5 hours if you're suffocating. I mean, come on!

Besides that, I would like to say that this site rocks! So many horror movies!
peegaseu (7/1/2010 @ 6:43 am)
OK, I'm 18 minutes into this and I'm already completely annoyed by the guy in the baseball cap. Sadly, most Indonesian movie seem to have a character like this, sort of a horror-film Jar Jar Binks - an unamusing but impossible to ignore distraction who ends up destroying the entire film. Does the movie get better? Does that guy get killed early on? Argggh.
