I\'m a fan of the man\'s work, don\'t get me wrong. This film treads much of the same water as his superior effort, Marebito... with a less satisfying conclusion. I\'m all for open interpretations in an obscure film, but this vicious little film seems a bit too nebulous for my tastes.

Don\'t bother with this... watch the excellent Marebito instead!!!

O_O AGH. I almost stopped at the part that mae my teeth hurt, ouch... At least it had a happy ending, otherwise I\'d be dying right now. I\'m happy I watched it cos it got easier to watch as it went along and... yeah. Still it was pretty painful to watch but that\'s the point, right?
warren (6/19/2009 @ 12:45 am)
wow. no explicit meaning, yet, it held me throughout because of my search for one. still trying to figure out my interpretation.. the fireworks?? hmmm... i think the point is that shinya is the sick pervert holding us prisoner throughout this movie. thats my guess. cause he kept repeating that... again.. just a guess tho.

This is a dumb movie! It makes no sense and what is up with the darkness? At least use some dim lighting so people have an idea of what is going on!

Looks like a murder-suicide.

The two of them were in love, but something went wrong along he way. She was trying to \'get away\' from him and he was trying to stop her. By saying someone \'imprisoned her before she could get away\' was like saying she was close to successfully killing herself but he stopped her.

That \'maze\' they\'re in is a representation of Hell so to speak, a \'lobby\' for the afterlife hence all the killing, screams and bloody body parts. Pointing out how she says \'You\'ll be one of them if you don\'t move now\', meaning the battered bodies.

Both of their memories are quite hazy, and they keep dozing off for a few seconds; in reality this is where they\'re regaining consciousness in the room at the end. He shuts his eyes and says he remembers \"a cherished thought,\" as she puts it, and, with a tear running down his cheek, he adds that he also saw fireworks. Then she dozes off, and after he wakes her up again, she says that she felt like she was waking up from a dream, laying in a room, noticing the TV showing the weather forecast. She adds that she felt lonely, and that \"it was like falling into a place like this\" - she\'s remembering the deep depression she felt before she took her life.

He awakes 1st since apparently he got stabbed first before she attempted to kill herself, which is why you don\'t see her in the \'maze\' until later on when she finally kills herself.

Now we\'re back in the room again. What we don\'t see is that she regains her consciousness and tries to dial the Japanese version of 911, but doesn\'t have the strength to make the call. Before she can dial the number, she drops the phone and collapses.

That\'s when he wakes up. He realizes that they\'re both still alive and says \"You got out, good... good...\". He manages to dial the last digit of the emergency call.

They both survive. And we see a photograph of her being happy and much older at the end of the movie, shortly before the old man goes out to smell the laundry.

The old man is him, many years from now... And the scene where they\'re both sitting there, watching the fireworks - it takes place before all this happens. It was an intimate moment that they shared, etched into his memory, the cherished moment that made him cry (in his concrete cell) when he remembered the fireworks that lit up his heart.

That\'s what I got out of it anyway. :/
10/10. Loved it.

This director is nothing short of being a PURE GENIUS! I could interpret this movie in about 10 ways, if not more. So many ways to look at this film and so many conclusions to draw. It is so great that the ending is a "left open" but "closed" so you can draw your own ending, while having one as well.

This is NOT the kind of movie for those who are looking for every detail and ending to be spelled out for them. HUGE Mind bending film and psychiatric horror.

In my mind, this is a 20/10 easily. I loved this so much more than any other type that is out there. I wish this director had more!
